Description
4” pot. Sinningia are a type of gesneriad, native to South America. S cooperi is native mainly to Brazil, where it grows in cracks in rocks or, rarely, as an epiphyte. It produces a large, round tuberous caudex that may be slightly concave in the center. The caudex on the seed-grown plants we are selling measures about 1.5-2” in diameter above ground level. This species does well in a basket because the stems tend to be long and pendant. It produces showy clusters of bright orange-red flowers that would be attractive to hummingbirds if the plant were outside. They are somewhat cold-tolerant, but should be protected from freezing. Typically, the plants go through semi-dormant periods when the stems die down, followed by production of many new stems from the top of the caudex. S cooperi grows rapidly to quickly produce specimen-sized plants. The plants for sale should be blooming size.
