Puya species

Description

Not often seen for sale, these South American terrestrial bromeliads are fast growers that can become large. They can grow outside in climates where temperatures do not go below freezing in the winter. They flower with tall spikes in a variety of colors ranging from chartreuse to turquoise, blue and near-black. The only species currently available is alpestris, which is the one with turquoise-colored flowers. The plants for sale are young seedlings in 2” pots. Once they grow a little, they can be planted in a well-drained spot in your garden.
