Description

2” pot. Primary hybrid between two small to medium-sized species native to Central and South America. E alata bears tall spikes of dark brownish-purple flowers with lavender or white lips with darker purple markings. Flowers have a pleasant “baby powder” fragrance and are produced at variable times from spring through fall. E cordigera has branching spikes of 2” mahagony colored flowers in spring, with a white to bright pink lip and a “powdery-spicy” fragrance. Unusually showy for an Encyclia. Both species are attractive plants with fat, spherical pseudobulbs topped by leathery dark green leaves. Photo shows Encyclia alata. Mid-size to near blooming size seedlings.
